Hungarian uprising![]() A group of armed Hungarian revolutionaries pose for the camera. These young people, who had known no other regime than the communist one, were fighting in a national uprising against Soviet domination in October 1956. For a few weeks they appeared to be successful, but when Russian planes bombed Budapest and Red Army tanks moved in, the revolution collapsed.

The author claims that the Polish and Hungarian uprisings in 1956 opened the way for the Chinese to make authoritative decisions in the Soviet bloc. Grove, born Andris Grof, grew up in Budapest under the Nazi regime, escaped the Russian bombing of the city, lived under several communist governments then fled west after the Hungarian uprising against the Soviets in 1956. This was first invoked during the Hungarian uprising. |
