Hungerford

Town in West Berkshire, England, 14 km/9 mi northwest of Newbury; population (2001) 5,560. Hungerford is a centre for the breeding and stabling of racehorses and offers angling on the River Kennet. The ancient name for Hungerford was Ingleford, meaning ‘Ford of the Angles’.

In 1986 a local man, Michael Ryan, ran amok in Hungerford, shooting dead 13 people before killing himself.
