Hunsaker, Jerome

Hunsaker, Jerome (Clarke) (1886–1984)

US aeronautical engineer who designed the flying boat NC-4 (which made the first transatlantic flight in 1919) and the airship Shenandoah. He also founded the first college course in aeronautical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1914. He taught there 1912–52 and developed the first modern wind tunnel in the USA. In charge of US naval aircraft design during World War I, he served for many years as an industry consultant.

He was born in Creston, Iowa.
