Hunt, Thomas Sterry (1826–1892)

US chemist and geologist. From 1847–72 he was chemist and mineralogist of the Canadian Geological Survey, and he was professor of geology (1872–78) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He wrote ‘Essay on the History of the Names Cambrian and Silurian’ published in Canadian Naturalist in 1872, and his other works include Chemical and Geological Essays (1875), Mineral Physiology and Physiography (1886), A New Basis for Chemistry (1887), and Systematic Mineralogy (1891). Hunt was born in Norwich, Connecticut.
