Huntington Beach

City in Orange County, southwestern California, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Los Angeles, on the Pacific Ocean; population (1990) 181,500. Oil discovered in the area in 1920 stimulated the city's growth and the industrial development of Southern California.

Oil wells on land and offshore near Huntington Beach are among the most active in the state, and petroleum and natural gas production remains the city's major industry. In addition, there is a wide variety of light manufacturing. The city's 13 km/8 mi of beaches are considered by some to be the surfing capital of California.
