Hunyady László

Opera by Ferenc Erkel (libretto by B Egressy), first produced in Budapest, Hungary, on 27 January 1844. It is the chief Hungarian national opera. After surviving one plot against him, the politician László is imprisoned by the palatine Gara, the father of László's fiancée Mária, who promises his daughter to the king in exchange for László's death. László survives three blows of the executioner's sword, but the fourth kills him.
