Hurok, Sol(omon) (1888-1974)

Russian-born US theatrical producer. From 1914 he produced musical and theatrical events and over the years arranged US appearances for the most prominent figures in European music and dance, including Anna Pavlova and Artur Rubenstein, as well as Russian ensembles such as the Bolshoi Ballet. His autobiographical Impresario and S Hurok Presents appeared in 1946 and 1953 respectively.

Hurok was born in Pogar, Russia, and arrived in the USA in 1906. A lifelong devotee of music, he originally organized concerts for New York unions and social groups. In later years he worked with the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) television network producing television specials.
