Huron

City and seat of Beadle County, in east-central South Dakota, on the James River, 72 km/45 mi north of Mitchell; population (2000) 11,900.

Huron has meat-packing and forestry industries and is a transportation and market centre for the surrounding livestock and grain-farming area. Beverages, cattle feed, and dairy goods are produced. A number of federal and state agencies have their offices here. Huron University (founded 1883) is situated in the city, and the South Dakota State Fair is held here annually.
