Hurst, James Willard

Hurst, James Willard (1910-1997)

US legal scholar. He studied the relationship between law and society, and between the legislative and judicial processes. His books on US legal history include Law and the Conditions of Freedom in the 19th Century US (1956) and Law and Economic Growth (1964).

Born in Rockford, Illinois, he taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1937-80 (emeritus 1981).
