Husa, Karel (1921– )

Czech-born US composer and conductor. He studied at Prague Conservatory and with Nadia Boulanger and Arthur Honegger in Paris, France. He emigrated to the USA in 1954, and was professor at Cornell University from 1961. He has been influenced by Czech folk music, neoclassicism, and serialism.

Sinfonietta (1947), Trois Fresques (1949), Divertimento for strings (1949), Symphony (1954), Fantasies (1957), Mosaïques (1961), Concerto for brass quintet and orchestra (1970), trumpet concerto (1974), Monodrama (1976), The Trojan Women, ballet for orchestra (1981); Symphonic Suite (1984), Concerto for Orchestra (1980), concertos for organ, trumpet, and cello (1987–88).

Chamber

three string quartets (1948–68), Variations for piano quintet (1984).
