Huxley, Julian Sorell (1887-1975)

English biologist, first director general of UNESCO, and a founder of the World Wildlife Fund (now the World Wide Fund for Nature). He wrote popular science books, including Essays of a Biologist (1923). He was knighted in 1958.

Huxley was educated at Eton and Oxford. He became professor at the Rice Institute, Texas 1913-16, professor of zoology at Kings College, London 1925-27 and Fullerian Professor at the Royal Institution 1926-29.
