Huysmans, Camille (1871-1968)

Belgian politician. He entered parliament as a Socialist in 1910. From 1905-21 he was secretary of the Second International, and between the World Wars held several posts in the Belgian Cabinet. He served as burgomaster of Antwerp (1933-40), but escaped to England during World War II; he was reinstated as burgomaster in 1944. He was prime minister in a post-war coalition government (1946-47) and subsequently minister of education (1947-49). Huysmans was born in Bilsen, and was educated in Liège, Belgium.
