Coal-mining town in Zimbabwe, 300 km/186 mi northwest of Bulawayo; population (2002 est) 35,000. It is the centre of the country's chief coal-mining area, with the western coalfields covering at least 1,000 sq km/386 sq mi. There are also tin and copper mines. Hwange National Park is nearby.

The elephants will start their journey on Monday from the private ranch in southern Zimbabwe to Hwange, where they will first live under supervision to ensure they can survive in the wild.
