hydrophyte

Plant adapted to live in water, or in waterlogged soil.

Hydrophytes may have leaves with a very reduced or absent cuticle and no stomata (since there is no need to conserve water), a reduced root and water-conducting system, and less supporting tissue since water buoys plants up. There are often numerous spaces between the cells in their stems and roots to make gas exchange with all parts of the plant body possible. Many have highly divided leaves, which lessens resistance to flowing water; an example is spiked water milfoil Myriophyllum spicatum.
