In 1977, a team of geologists found the first hydrothermal vent near the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Scientists working off the California coast use chemical-sniffing probes, robotically driven subs, and seafloor-tethered temperature sensors to watch flows of lava pave over a once-thriving ecosystem at hydrothermal vents several kilometers below the ocean's surface. Unlike typical ocean hot spots, such as hydrothermal vents, the Gorda Escarpment has unique properties which benefit egg development. |
