Hymn of Praise

Felix Mendelssohn's symphonic cantata, Op. 52, in which three movements of a symphony precede the choral portion. It was composed in 1840 and first produced in St Thomas's Church, Leipzig, Germany, on 25 June 1840. The first performance in English was given at the Birmingham Festival, England, on 23 September 1840.

It is in the month of May that we celebrate the Visitation, when Mary greets her cousin Elizabeth with this incomparably beautiful hymn of praise to the all-loving God, whose ways are not our ways: "He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly/He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away.
