Hynninen, Jorma (1941– )

Finnish baritone and administrator. He sang with the Finnish National Opera from 1969, notably as Topi in the premiere of The Red Line by Sallinen, a role he also sang at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1979 and at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1983. He created the title roles in Sallinen's The King Goes Forth to France (1984), Rautavaara's Thomas (1985) and Vincent (1990), and Sallinen's Kullervo (Los Angeles, 1992). In 1987 he performed at the Edinburgh Festival as Rigoletto and Merikanto's Juha. He sang at Chicago and San Francisco 1988–89, and was artistic director of the Finnish National Opera 1984–90. His recordings include Winterreise and songs by Sibelius.
