Hypnerotomachia Polifili

    0.01 sec.

Hypnerotomachia Polifili

An Italian prose romance published in 1499. Written in both Latin and Italian by the Dominican monk Francesco Colonna, it describes a lover's search for his mistress. Printed by Aldus Manutius, it was celebrated for the beauty of its woodcut illustrations and typography.

The anonymous woodcut illustrations reflect the influence of both Andrea Mantegna and Giovanni Bellini; several of them record contemporary Italian garden designs, and others are remarkable as architectural fantasies.

The text was translated into French by Jean Martin and Jacques Ghorry in 1546 and published, with extra pictures, in a format almost as beautiful as the original. An incomplete English version appeared as The Strife of Love in a Dreame (1592).

A new vocabulary transformed an aesthetics of materials already present in the polychromy and rich spolia of the city's fabric with inlay, carving, molding, painting, and gilding of precious marbles, stucco, and wood in all'antica motifs present in new books illustrated and printed in Venice, such as the Hypnerotomachia Polifili (1499).
The Hypnerotomachia Polifili ("The Strife of Love in a Dream"), contains over 200 woodcuts of very high quality in its 200 folio leaves of text; the artist remains unknown but admired.
