hypoventilation

In medicine, an abnormally slow resting respiratory rate characterized by shallow breathing. It can result in a lack of oxygen in the blood and can lead to organ damage and death if it is severe and remains untreated. Injury to the respiratory centre and some drugs, such as opioid analgesics, can cause hypoventilation.
