Ypsilanti

Town in Washtenaw County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 24,800. It is situated on the Huron River, 8 km/5 mi southeast of Ann Arbor. It manufactures sheet-metal machinery, paper, plastic, and ladders. It is home to Eastern Michigan University (1849) and Cleary College (1883), and the University of Michigan operates an aeronautics research centre at Willow Run Airport.

Ypsilanti's first settlement was an early 19th-century French fur trading post. It was permanently settled in 1823, and named after the Greek patriot Demetrios Ypsilanti in 1832. It has been best known for its large auto plants, especially General Motors' huge Willow Run installation, which became famous for producing B-24 bombers during World War II. The 1993 closure of this factory and the consequent loss of 4,000 jobs profoundly affected the local economy.
