IDA

Abbreviation for International Development Association.

Ida

Mountain range in northwest Turkey (Asiatic), to the north of the Gulf of Edremit, forming part of the border between the provinces of Çanakkale and Balikesir. Mount Gargarus (Turkish Kirklar Tepesi) is its highest peak, rising to 1,774 m/5,820 ft.

The northern slopes of the range command the ancient plains of Troy. In Greek mythology, it was the traditional site of the Judgement of Paris; the Trojan prince choosing Aphrodite as the fairest goddess, in return for her offer of Helen, the most beautiful woman. The event was considered the starting point of the Trojan wars. A temple to the Phrygian earth goddess Cybele was established on Mount Gargarus.

Ida (lived 547–59)

First Anglian king of Bernicia. His rule probably did not extend south of the Tees. The kingdom of Deira, between the River Tees and the Humber estuary, was founded after his death.
