If| Small island in the French département of Bouches-du-Rhône, in the Gulf of Lyons, 3 km/2 mi southwest of Marseille. Its fortress, Château d'If, was built by Francis I in 1524; it was used as a state prison (the French revolutionaries Mirabeau and Louis Philippe, or Philippe Egalité, were among its prisoners), and features in Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Monte Cristo 1844–45. |
