IJssel

River in the Netherlands; length 110 km/68 mi. The IJssel is the northernmost arm of the Rhine delta, leaving the main stream near Arnhem and flowing north into the IJsselmeer, 6 km/4 mi northwest of Kampen. The river is navigable for its entire length.

The upper reaches of the IJssel were originally a Roman canal constructed in around 12 BC to unite the Rhine with the Oude IJssel, which joins the Nieuwe IJssel at Doesburg.
