Ibáñez del Campo, Carlos (1877–1960)

Chilean military dictator and president 1927–31 and 1952–58. His administration instituted programmes of public works and educational and labour reform, but the effects of global economic depression in 1931 resulted in civil unrest and he was forced into exile. During his second term in office, opposition in congress and his own frailty hampered his aims to curb inflation and to reform bureaucratic governmental structures. On his exit from office, Chile's economic condition was critical.

Ibáñez del Campo served as minister of war 1925–27 and vice president in 1927, later becoming president upon the forced resignation of president Emiliano Figueroa.

He returned from exile in 1939 and after several attempts to regain power during the period 1937–1942, he gained election to the senate in 1949, and a second presidential term in 1952.
