Ibarra

Capital of Imbabura province, Ecuador, about 80 km/50 mi northeast of Quito; population (1996) 81,000. Ibarra has woollen and cotton mills, and is noted for the silver- and woodwork produced by native craftspeople in the region. It stands at the foot of Imbabura volcano, at an altitude of 2,300m/7,546 ft. A railway connects the city with Quito and the port of San Lorenzo on the northwest coast.

Ibarra, which was founded in the early 17th century, is also a bishop's see. There is a September festival in the capital.
