Iceland spar

Form of calcite, CaCO3, originally found in Iceland. In its pure form Iceland spar is transparent and exhibits the peculiar phenomenon of producing two images of anything seen through it (birefringence or double refraction). It is used in optical instruments. The crystals cleave into perfect rhombohedra.
