iconographyIn art history, a way to classify works of art with reference to its subject matter, themes, and symbolism, rather than style. Iconographic study can also be used when analysing the style of a work. Attaching significance to symbols can help to identify subject matter (for example, a saint holding keys usually represents St Peter) and makes it possible to place a work of art in its historical context. In another tableau, Mary's head is framed by a round window, a whimsical allusion to the haloes ubiquitous in icon paintings. There is a growing interest in icons and icon painting, amongst people of all denominations and people of no faith. German critic Claudia Jolles has characterized Bulatov's interest as the "energy" behind the scene he paints; that "the visible world is little more than a momentary disturbance in the light radiating from the picture" puts him closer to icon painting (or to Suprematism) than to Pop art. |
