Amid paeans to idealized love, Tannhauser loses his grip and embarrasses everyone by singing of physical love's rewards, about which he knows plenty. Bob is the apparent cohesive thread in the three plays, appearing in the first with his old friend Joey in a hotel room, in the second with his sister Jolly and her husband Carl in their home, and in the third with Deeny, a still idealized love of the past, in a restaurant. We see idealized love suggested by the picturesque and romantic symbols and communicated through the body, its wounds and blood. |
