idiophone

One of the four main classes of musical instruments used in the original Sachs-Hornbostel system, the others being aerophone, membranophone, and chordophone. In instruments which are idiophones, the sound emanates from the vibration of ‘the substance of the instrument itself’. Thus, bells and gongs are included, as are castanets and glass harmonicas.
