Trinidad

Town in Beni region, northern Bolivia, near the River Mamoré, 400 km/250 mi northeast of La Paz; population (1992 est) 57,300. The city lies on an old lake bed, the Moxos Plains, and originated in a Jesuit mission founded here in 1686. Industries include sugar refining and alcohol distilling. It is also a commercial centre trading in rice, cotton, sugar cane, cattle, furs, and feathers. Trinidad has an airport, and is linked by roads to Puerto Ballivián and to Cochabamba. It is the home of Mariscal Jose Ballivián University.
