Ifni

Former Spanish overseas province (1860–1969) in southwest Morocco, on the Atlantic coast opposite the Canary Islands; area 1,920 sq km/740 sq mi. The chief town is Sidi Ifni. The region is largely desert, but in the coastal area there is fishing, barley is grown, and sheep, camels, and goats are reared. There are also handicraft industries.

Ifni was first settled as a trading post in 1476 by Diego García de Herrera, lord of the Canary Islands. Ifni was part of a larger area ceded to Spain by Morocco in 1860; it was ceded to Morocco in 1969.

The sovereign also approved the proposals submitted by the ministry of Interior related to the creation of new prefectures and provinces in Ouezzane, Sidi Slimane, Guercif, Driouch, Berrechid, Sidi Bennour, Youssoufia, Rhamna, Fkih Bensalah, Midelt, Tinghir, Sidi Ifni and Tarfaya.
Ibrahim Sabelail, the Moroccan rights activist who initially told journalists about the alleged abuses in Sidi Ifni last month, was sentenced on Thursday to six months' jail and a fine 1,000 dirhams ($137).
While Al-Jazeera's initial reporting might well have erred on the dramatic side, there does seem to be more of a story in Sidi Ifni than the government would like to be made known.
