will-o'-the-wispLight sometimes seen over marshy ground, believed to be burning gas containing methane from decaying organic matter. An Australian scientist put forward the hypothesis in 1995 that the phenomenon may be caused by barn owls, which sometimes develop a ghostly glow due to a light-emitting honey fungus that they pick up from rotting trees. Purplish photos and glass vials of water documented the sole performance of Ignisfatuus, 1996-2000, that took place in a Baltimore garden: Arterial casts of a brain, heart, and lungs fluoresced to Ponselle's recorded voice according to the lunar cycle and a system of light sensors, microswitches, and peristaltic pumps. In Ignisfatuus, 1995-96, recently shown at Alexander and Bonin in New York, Lincoln created a hydraulic model of the human cardiovascular and endocrine systems under the influence of a full moon--and the evocative recorded voice of the late soprano Rosa Ponselle. |
