Iguaçu

River in southwest Brazil, rising near Curitiba in the state of Paraná; length 1,200 km/746 mi. It follows a meandering course to the west, forming for the last 120 km/75 mi of its course the frontier with Argentina, and joins the River Paraná at a point where Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay meet.

About 18 km/11 mi before this point are the Iguaçu Falls, where the river plunges over an escarpment, in the form of a 4 km/2.5 mi crescent, to a gorge 71 m/233 ft below. Among the numerous cataracts are projecting ledges carpeted with tropical vegetation and festooned with creepers. These spectacular falls are crossed by a greater volume of water than the Niagara Falls. The area has been designated a national park by the Brazilian government.
