Yser

River of France and Belgium, rising 8 km/5 mi northeast of St-Omer; length 79 km/49 mi. It flows eastwards across the département of Nord, turning gradually northwest across Flanders, to the North Sea 3 km/2 mi northwest of Nieuport. It connects several canals in Belgium.

The area saw heavy fighting in October 1914 during World War I (see Yser, Battle of the).
