Ikeda, Hayato

Ikeda, Hayato (1899–1965)

Japanese politician and economist, prime minister 1960–64. He introduced an ‘income doubling policy’ of economic growth and higher living standards. He was a supporter of the US–Japan Security Treaty of 1960, and developed a low-key style in international relations during the post-war recovery period.

Educated in Kyoto, he became finance minister of the Liberal (Conservative) Party in 1949.
