Ilion

Village within German Flatts township, Herkimer County, east-central New York State; population (1990) 8,900. Ilion is situated on the Mohawk River, 16 km/10 mi southeast of Utica.

Prospering with the growth of the Erie Canal in the 1820s, Ilion declined with the waterway later in the century, but was revitalized by the opening of the Remington firearms company, and still produces guns and ammunition. Among its other manufactures are office equipment and machinery. The village lies in a dairy farming and market gardening region, and is now part of a larger community that includes the neighbouring municipalities of Mohawk, Herkimer, and Frankfort.
