The music industry saw its profits plummet once this same age group of roughly 12-30 embraced the illegal downloading of music on such sites as Napster. To get the "Respect Copyrights" patch, Scouts must be able to identify five types of copyrighted works and three ways of pirating the same, and must undertake activities ranging from visiting a movie studio to talking with victims of illegal downloading. Jay Cooper, a music specialist in the IP department, points out that the recording industry--despite scoring some big wins against illegal downloading in court--has dropped from seeing $40 billion in retail sales to $26 billion and said that the film industry should take notice and act quickly. |
