Illica, Luigi (1857–1919)

Italian playwright and librettist. He is best known for his libretti for Puccini's Manon Lescaut, La Bohème (with G Giacosa), Tosca, and Madama Butterfly.

The first of his 88 libretti was for Antonio Smareglia's Il vassallo di Szigeth (produced in Vienna, Austria, in 1889); he also collaborated with Alfredo Catalani, Umberto Giordano, Pietro Mascagni, and Baron Frédéric D'Erlanger.
