Ilorin

Capital of Kwara state, Nigeria, situated on the Kaduna–Kano railway, 300 km/186 mi north of Lagos; population (2007 est) 847,600. It is a major trading centre for the southern savannah zone of western Nigeria, trading in tobacco and wood products. Industries include textiles and crafts.

Ilorin is one of the most northerly of the Yoruba towns. It was established in the 18th century as the centre of one of the states of the Oyo Empire. It came under Muslim (Fulani) control in the early 19th century. In 1892 it was captured by the British.
