Ilmen

Lake in Novgorod oblast (region), northwestern Russian Federation. It measures some 45 km/30 mi long (east–west) and 35 km/22 mi wide. Its shores are low and swampy, and its sole outlet is the River Volkhov, which connects it to Lake Ladoga.

Lake Ilmen lay on the river trade-route that connected the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea in early medieval times.

The surface area of Lake Ilmen varies seasonally and yearly, but averages 982 sq km/379 sq mi.
