Ilocos Sur

Coastal province of northwest Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 2,580 sq km/ 996 sq mi; population (1995) 545,000. The capital is Vigan. The province is rather flat with poor soil; the main crop is maguey (or century plant, a green vegetable). Fishing is the main economic activity, and the chief industry is weaving. Tobacco and pottery are also produced. Several beach resorts attract tourists.
