Iloilo City

Capital of Iloilo province on southeast Panay Island in the Philippines; population (1995) 334,500. Iloilo is a major port; its freight traffic in sugar is now less important than its passenger traffic (shipping migrant labourers to Negros Island). Products include raw silk, and pineapple fibre for weaving.

The city is Spanish in influence, and has two universities.
