Ilosvay, Maria von (1913-1987)

Hungarian mezzo. She toured North America with the Salzburg Opera Guild 1937-39, as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte/All Women Do It. She joined the Hamburg Opera in 1940 and guest-starred in Vienna, Munich, and Stuttgart after the war. In 1949 she took part in the first performance of Orff's Antigonae, at Salzburg, and from 1951 was heard as Erda at Bayreuth. She performed at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London in 1956. Berg's Countess Geschwitz is among her recorded roles.
