Ilyushin, Sergey Vladimirovich (1894–1977)

Soviet aircraft designer. He designed both military and passenger aircraft. His principal designs included the Ts KB 30 twin-engined plane (1936), the Il-2 armoured attacker (1946), the Il-18 (Moscow) turbo-prop airliner (1957), and the Il-62 turbo-jet airliner (1962).

Ilyushin was born in Diyalovo, USSR. He was educated at the Soviet Air Force Engineering Academy. He won numerous prizes and awards, and was a lieutenant-general, a deputy to the Supreme Soviet, and a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
