Imbrie, Andrew

Imbrie, Andrew (Welsh) (1921–2007)

US composer and pianist. He wrote many orchestral, chamber, and vocal music compositions, as well as the operas Three Against Christmas (1960) and Angle of Repose (1976), based on the novel by Wallace Stegner. His Requiem (1985), written in memory of his son, who died at the age of 19, was nominated for a Grammy Award.

He studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and with Roger Sessions at Princeton University in New Jersey. He went on to get a master's degree in music at the University of California, Berkeley; he was professor there 1949–91. He wrote in standard forms, with 12-note technique.

Christmas in Peebles Town (1964), Angle of Repose (1976).

Orchestral

three symphonies (1966–70), concertos for violin (1954), cello (1972), piano (1973, 1974), and flute (1977).

Chamber

five string quartets (1942–87), cello sonata (1969).

Choral

Requiem for soprano, chorus and orchestra (1984).
