US composer and pianist. He studied with Roger Sessions and at the University of California, at Berkeley; he was professor there from 1960. He writes in standard forms, with 12-note technique.

three symphonies (1966-70), concertos for violin (1954), cello (1972), piano (1973, 1974), and flute (1977).

five string quartets (1942-87), cello sonata (1969).
