Imeneo

Opera by Handel (libretto adapted from S Stampiglia), composed in 1738 and first produced at Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, England, on 22 November 1740. It was Handel's penultimate opera. In the story, the Athenian Rosmene has promised her hand to Tirinto, but marries Imeneo, who has rescued her from pirates. The moral is that gratitude and reason should triumph over the passions.
