Immokalee

Unincorporated community in Collier County, south-central Florida, 50 km/31 mi southeast of Fort Myers; population (1990) 14,100.

Immokalee lies on the northern edge of the Big Cypress Swamp, and is a trading centre for local farms growing tomatoes and other market garden produce. During the growing season, it houses a large number of migrant labourers, many of whom are Mexican.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is demanding that McDonald's and the rest of the fast food industry pay fair wages to farm workers who pick their produce.
Lucas Benitez from the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a community-based organization of farmworkers picking in Florida whose members are predominantly from Mexico, Guatemala and Haiti, adds to another dimension to the impact of NAFTA.
Taco Bell was ousted from the campus in October after students took up the cause of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, which represents Florida tomato pickers.
