Imperial Beach

Imperial Beach

City in San Diego County, in the far southwest of California; population (1990) 26,500. Imperial Beach lies on the Pacific Ocean just south of San Diego Bay, 14 km/9 mi south of the city of San Diego, and 5 km/3 mi north of the border of Baja California, Mexico. It is the most southwesterly city in the continental USA.

Many of the residents of Imperial Beach are employed at the nearby naval air station. The city's 6 km/4 mi of public beaches attract tourists, as does local fishing, and there are many expensive beach houses.
