Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine

Institution established in South Kensington, London, in 1907, for advanced scientific training and research, applied especially to industry. Part of the University of London, it comprises four separate colleges, the City and Guilds College (engineering faculty), the Royal College of Science (pure science), the Royal School of Mines (mining), and the Imperial College School of Medicine. St Mary's Hospital Medical School was added in 1988, resulting in the change of name. Numerous other medical schools have subsequently been merged with Imperial College. The college has been granted the right to grant its own degrees, and it is intended that it shall withdraw from the University of London.
